Bacteriostatic Water 10ml

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is sterile, non-pyrogenic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which is 9 mg per millilitre. Every lyophilised compound in this catalogue needs a diluent, and this is the one most laboratory protocols specify.

Read the word bacteriostatic closely. Benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth and reproduction. It does not kill bacteria and it will not sterilise a liquid that has already been contaminated. What it buys you is time: a vial can be punctured repeatedly over a period commonly cited as up to 28 days without contaminating organisms multiplying in it.

Sterile Water for Injection carries no preservative at all. SWFI is a single-use diluent, and solutions prepared with it are handled on a timescale of hours rather than weeks. If your protocol reconstitutes a vial and draws from it over several sessions, the preservative is the reason to choose this product. If your protocol requires a preservative-free diluent, this is the wrong one.
